How to Gut-Load Feeder Insects (And Why It Matters)
An insect is a delivery vehicle. A starved cricket delivers almost nothing; the same cricket after 24 hours of good feeding delivers protein, vitamins, minerals and moisture. That's gut-loading — and it's the cheapest upgrade you can make to your pet's diet.
The principle
Insects digest fast, so their gut contents — and therefore their nutritional payload — reflect the last 24–48 hours of feeding. Feeders often arrive having been in transit, so whatever their condition on arrival, what matters is what you feed them before they're fed off.
The routine
24–48 hours before feeding your pet: move the feeders you'll use into a separate small container (room temperature — cold insects don't eat). Give them unrestricted dry chow plus fresh moisture-rich veg: carrot, butternut, sweet potato, leafy greens. For mealworms kept in the fridge, this warm feeding window is doubly important — it wakes their appetite and loads them up.
What to load with
Base: a quality dry chow — our roach/cricket chow works for crickets and roaches, and wheat bran is the base for mealworms and superworms. Boosters: orange and carrot for vitamin A precursors, dark leafy greens for calcium and vitamins, butternut for beta-carotene. Avoid: onion, citrus in excess for roach colonies, anything mouldy, and dog/cat food as a staple (too much protein and fat for sustained use).
Gut-loading is not dusting
They're partners, not substitutes. Gut-loading fills the insect from the inside; dusting coats it with calcium/vitamins on the outside at the moment of feeding. Skip either and the diet has a hole. The full sequence: gut-load 24–48h → dust → feed immediately (dust wears off within minutes as insects groom).
Does it really matter?
Calcium and vitamin A deficiencies are among the most common nutritional problems vets see in captive reptiles, and both are heavily influenced by feeder preparation. Ten minutes of setup, twice a week, closes that gap.
