Madagascan hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa) are the gentle giants of the roach world — famous for the hissing sound adults make by forcing air through their breathing holes. They serve two audiences: adults make fascinating, hardy and completely harmless pets, while the young of this forest-dwelling species are an excellent feeder for larger reptiles, birds, monkeys and fish, with a very good meat-to-shell ratio and plenty of protein.
Sizing
| Size | Length |
|---|---|
| Small | 2–3cm |
| Medium | 3–4cm |
| Large | 4–5cm |
As a pet
- Docile, slow-moving and safe to handle — a popular first invertebrate for kids
- Long-lived for an insect: adults commonly reach 2–3 years
- Minimal setup: a ventilated enclosure with hiding spots, warmth and simple food
As a feeder
Feed nymphs sized no longer than the space between your pet's eyes. Dust with a calcium supplement before feeding to reptiles. Our roach care & breeding guide covers colony basics that apply to hissers too.
Care
Hissers can climb smooth surfaces, so use a secure lid with a petroleum-jelly barrier around the rim. Keep warm (24–30°C) with egg trays or cork bark for hiding space, and provide Roach/Cricket Chow plus water crystals, supplemented with fruit and veg scraps. Well cared for, they'll remain healthy and active for years.
