Wheat bran is the classic two-in-one for worm keeping: it's both the bedding your mealworms and superworms live in and the food they eat. Fill the tub a few centimetres deep and the colony feeds itself as it burrows.
How to use
- Layer 3–5cm deep in a smooth-sided, ventilated container
- Add a slice of carrot or potato — or water crystals — as the moisture source; the bran itself must stay dry
- Sieve out frass and top up with fresh bran every few weeks
Storage tip
Keep unused bran sealed in a cool, dry place. Freezing the bag for 48 hours before first use kills any grain-mite or beetle eggs that come standard with any milled bran product.
