Vermiculite (5dm³ bag) is the standard medium for reptile egg incubation — a sterile, lightweight mineral that holds moisture steadily and releases it slowly, exactly what developing eggs need.
Uses
- Egg incubation: mix with water (roughly 1:1 by weight for most species), half-bury eggs, and maintain stable humidity through the whole incubation
- Humid hides: a moist vermiculite layer in a hide box helps geckos and snakes shed cleanly
- Moisture blanket: a top layer over substrate slows evaporation in humid setups
Why vermiculite
It's inorganic, so it doesn't rot, compact or grow mould the way soil-based media can — and it's reusable after sterilising. Pair with a hygrometer to dial in humidity precisely.
